Although there are many articles on CCTV and surveillance systems, most are for the professional integrator and most are for commercial, industrial or government applications. This brief article is designed to acquaint the average homeowner to some of the key concepts and terms that might be helpful for a simple home surveillance system.

The basic surveillance system is comprised of the camera, lens, and monitor, and if recorded video is needed, then a recording device, such as a VCR or a DVR. Let's first look at the camera.

The key items to know about the camera are whether indoor or outdoor application, amount of available light for the camera to see, needed resolution of the camera, and last, wireless or hard wire from the camera to the monitor.

Light levels for cameras are usually measured in Lux, which is a measurement of light energy on a surface. A typical office environment might have 500 Lux whereas a residential street lighting might be 0.5 – 3 Lux. Decent color cameras often will have a 2 Lux or lower rating and monochrome (B & W) cameras often under 1 Lux.

A great way to handle night vision problems is with IR lighting. IR LEDs, usually on the camera itself, provide illumination and if a color camera, at night, the camera will switch to monochrome and is, therefore, essentially a 0 Lux camera for the distance of the IR LEDs.

Resolution for cameras is expressed in TV horizontal lines. Standard resolution for a B & W camera is perhaps 380 TV lines and a high resolution might be 550 TV lines or higher. For color, standard resolution is a minimum of 330 TV lines and high resolution 480 TV lines or higher. Professionals need a 500 TVL or higher, perhaps, to read the number of a license plate on a moving car. However, for most home security applications 380 TVL is sufficient.

Two types of image sensors are used in cameras today, CCD and CMOS. They use different technologies and generally speaking, CCD sensors create higher quality and lower noise images then

CMOS sensors. On the other hand, CMOS cameras consume far less power and cost much less to manufacture. CMOS cameras are rapidly catching up to CCD cameras in terms of image quality.

The lens is important and the focal length of the lens tells you the field of view the camera will see at a particular distance. For example, with a 1/3 inch format camera and lens, a 2.8mm lens will see at 10 feet away a 17 ft wide and 13 ft high area at about an 80-degree angle. Using an 8mm lens for the same distance, the area is now only 6 ft wide and 4.5 high and the angle is 33 degrees. The smaller the focal length number is the wider the field of view becomes.

Wireless transmission is increasingly popular because government regulations have changed and allow systems without a license to transmit up to around 100 meters line of sight. This means maybe an average range of 25-30 meters indoors. Although many of these cameras can be battery powered, for permanent use a power supply is still needed. This means no wire is needed between the camera and the monitor, but you still need an outlet, typically, to plug the DC converter power supply in for the camera and the monitor will also need its own power supply. Still, for many homeowners this is far preferable than running RG59 coax throughout their home.

The monitor can be a dedicated professional CCTV monitor, or in the case of most home surveillance systems, just use one of the TVs already available. Most of today's TVs have multiple A/V inputs and outputs with RCA type of connections.

If recording is needed, again most homes have either a VCR or DVR available. However, home VCRs and DVRs are not designed for 24 hour per day recording, 365 days per year. For this type of recording need, it is best to buy a separate, professional unit designed for heavy-duty recording.

If more than one camera is used then a switcher or quad processor is often used to change between camera pictures one at a time, or to display up to four cameras at the same time on one screen. Remember what is seen on the monitor or TV is what is recorded.

Professional integrators today use multiple channel DVRs for

recording up to 32 cameras, or more, in one box with large hard drives and network capability. For most home surveillance applications, however, a quad processor with a VCR or single channel DVR is sufficient.

The only thing that really matters is whether you have an available digital audio input (sounds like you do). If you have a suitable input you can connect the audio out of the Blu-ray player to the input of the HT receiver and connect the HDMI Blu-ray video output direct to an HDTV. Without an HDMI input you won't benefit from the advanced audio formats (but don't have the decoders for them anyway).

BUT note that you must have an HDTV to benefit.

You should consider carefully whether you want to buy Blu-ray. It's expensive and many people don't feel there is sufficient benefit over DVD. Unless you have a 40"+ 1080p HDTV you won't get that much better picture than upconverted DVD ... but will pay much more. DVDs are not going anywhere soon.

Security cameras generally transmit video over RG59 Coax Cable but in some cases it makes more sense to use Cat5 cable. This is especially true when trying to transmit the video signal over long distances. The solution to this kind of problem is the CCTV video balun.

A CCTV video balun is an impedance transformer. Impedance according to this web definition, is the total opposition that a circuit offers to the flow of alternating current or any other varying current at a particular frequency. It is a combination of resistance R and reactance X, measured in ohms.

In layman's terms a CCTV video balun converts a 75 ohm video signal over to the correct 100 ohm impedance for Cat5 cable and then back 75 ohm's again. In order for this to work you need 2 baluns. One for each end of the Cat5 cable.

Phew! One more move under my belt! Finding housing and moving around Yosemite this summer has been a big project, now I have rented an apartment to stay in until summer, and I am thrilled to settle in one place for awhile.

My friends have all pitched in to help me make my moves, they have been so very gracious to help me. I recruited a young friend and coworker at Arch Rock ( the entrance station that I work at in Yosemite) to help me in this last one, and I promised to make him dinner as a payback. Two of my girlfriends came over for the dinner as well, and we had fun chatting about our world here in Yosemite. One of the topics that came up was dating.My friend Marla brought up the topic of the lack of eligible males for females to date here. Salvador, being the big hearted Latin fella that he is, agreed with her. There's just not ANY single men around here, and Marla said, but I can come up with 20 great single women in my head immediately! Where's all the men? There's NO men around here! Kyra, our hostess, wasn't sure, either, about the availability of men in this area.

Well, being the newest of the group to Yosemite and all that, I felt compelled to play Devil's Advocate and to encourage exploration of another perspective on the topic.. Wait a minute...what do you mean? Are there just not any men around? Do the women really outnumber the men by so much? What do you think the ratio of men to women really is here? After several minutes of reflection, Marla said she felt it wasn't a ratio of women to men issue, but she just couldn't think of any single men in this area. So I challenged the group in the room to make a list of 20 single men in Yosemite. And we did. Only it took us awhile, because we had to discuss each one's merits or (demerits as it were ) as we made the list. At first, they wanted to disqualify some of them, but I reminded them the task was to make a list of single men, period, and not just a list of men we liked.After we came up with number 16, we agreed to stop, as the point was clear, there were 20 single men here, just not maybe 20 single men we would consider desirable. I have to confess that there was one guy mentioned that I said I would definitely NOT turn away should he show up at my door!

Which leads us to another point of our discussion, how is it that women are always lamenting the lack of good men, when men do not say there's not enough good women? And, are women kidding themselves when they say that they are available and ready for a serious relationship, yet don't find an available man or a good man? Are the men just being more honest when they say they don't want a serious relationship? My point I brought up in all this was that I feel like, if a person desires a relationship and is not in one, it usually is because some part of them does not want to be in one...not because of a lack of single datable (hot?) men (or women). I feel that there is a deeper part of them (their higher self ) that is ultimately in control and that part keeps them out of relationships, for the sake of its its own agenda. And the conscious or personality part of themselves that wants the relation can voice its desires, but ultimately it is not in charge of their destiny. Some people could use other names for these parts of us, I have a friend who does hypnotherapy and she calls the parts "the committee" and urges her clients to realize the presence of all their parts and to learn to get them to work together towards a desired goal. I just feel that we have an agenda created by us and for us by Spirit (our higher selves) and that agenda isn't always a known one. It may be of great need for someone to not be in a relationship even though the personality craves one and all that comes with it.

So, once again the topic of personal responsibility rears its ugly head. Its not numbers of available partners that dictates a persons chances of entering into a relationship, but the agenda of that persons higher self that keeps them either in or out of romantic relationships. Just how can a person know what their higher self's agenda is? Well, that would be a topic for the next dinner party. Stay tuned.

Oh and by the way, the answer to the question "When will I find my love object standing at my door wearing nothing but a big red ribbon?" is, when Spirit ( higher self ) feels its the right time for such a gift to arrive! Should I look out for the Fed Ex truck?

An Attorney's office or a law firm has to daily create a lot of documents or other paper work for clients like general correspondence, letters to clients, legal pleadings, interrogatories, briefs, subpoenas etc some of which will have to be produced in court. My good friend had a ticket to fly to Norway, something she had wanted to do for years. To my utter amazement, when she got to the airport she suddenly became filled with such anxiety and fear that she simply could not board the plane.

This was my first introduction to a panic attack, in fact, I had never even heard the term. Eventually, she discovered that she had a very severe hormonal imbalance that had weakened her system to the point that the stress of international travel just pushed her over the edge.

She is a wonderful woman, but had the bad habit of completely over-committing herself. Her heart was always open to help others, often to the point of self-neglect. On top of it all, she saw this as a sign of religious dedication and selflessness.

Her kitchen was full of naturalistic remedies, but her real problem was adrenal fatigue. No tonic or herbal substance can replace rest and sleep. Her life was a continual whirlwind of activity, all for a good cause, for sure; but in the end she essentially just burnt out.

Adrenal fatigue and anxiety

During menopause this is often magnified because the natural production of progesterone diminishes. The progesterone normally helps to bring a calming and balancing effect, but when the supplies are low, anxiety and tension often take over.

What can you do about panic attacks?

For people with severe anxiety disorders, medications can help. For most women, who have subclinical and chronic anxiety or panic attacks, there are safe and gentle natural methods to find relief. There are physical and emotional causes, each must be addressed to get a lasting solution.

Many women are on the go constantly. With demands from stressful jobs, raising children, caring for parents, and relationship issues, it comes as no surprise that panic attacks are one of the most common symptoms of menopause.

The emotional aspects

Learn to say no. My dear friend just could not turn down a request for a favor, to her own demise. You just cannot do everything, nor should you Take steps to manage the stress at work. Maybe that new promotion just is not worth the stress. Get some help with your work. Siblings, relatives, and friends might be able to share the load. Perhaps a trade of labor could work out for everyone.

Resolve the relationship issues, if possible. Things left to themselves tend to decay. The peace of mind from a healthy love life is immeasurable.

The physical aspects

Take time to rest. Learn the art of napping. Nobody can live a healthy life with 4-6 hours of sleep a night- at least not for long.

Take care of you mental and physical health. No need to be a martyr! Get exercise and fresh air, make sure your diet is full of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Find a good source of high quality vitamin and mineral supplements. The idea is to help your body recover it's hormonal balance.

Everytime it happens someone always points it out. Does anyone else have this problem ?
