Need a cctv system where i can watch it live on my computer.?
Basically, ive been looking for a recording type camera, which is small enough to fit inside a tank, where i can view the recordings LIVE on my computer, as i have quite a few geckos, and would like to see what they do at night, and when im not around. The recording device would need to be as small as possible, it would need to record at night, and give a good picture, it must be waterproof also. Cost is also quite important aswell, i dont need some over the top fancy thing, just something that will do exactly as i stated above, with a good clear picture. Thanks alot, perry.
An outdoor rated security cam with infrared emitters will work - though I don't know if the IR lights will irritate the geckos. Swann, Lorex and a few others make them. IP cameras are REALLY expensive so we'll skip those. The analog, outdoor rated security cams are around $50-$300 depending on what all yu want. They look pretty similar, so pay attention. I don't think you need one that can "see" in the dark 90 feet away, so one of the lo-end ones should be fine. Video quality is measured in horizontal lines, so get a camera that captures 400 horizontal lines or higher.
The trick, then, is to get that analog signal digitized.
You have a couple of methods, but none is inexpensive.
1) Connect the surveillance cam to a video recorder... There are some single camera recorders that record to SD memory. Around $200 or so. Video quality is not so good. Lots of video compression.
2) Connect the surveillance cam to a security DVR. A 4-channel with a 500 gig hard drive will keep recordings for a while. Most of these now allow you to assign the DVR an IP address so you can access the video from a computer on the same network. Around $500. Multiple cameras can provide different angles.
3) Install a video capture card into a computer that has LOTS of hard drive space to store the video... My least favorite option, because of the computer running all the time, but it is an option.
