We all know how far technology has come and the area of home surveillance and security is no different. While technology has advanced in this area, it's also allowed for things to get simpler, as well as easier to install. Now, the average homeowner or business owner can choose a complete home surveillance system and install it by themselves within just a short amount of time, usually an afternoon.

If you're looking to increase the level of protection and security at your home or business, as you begin to search, you'll find quite a few choices.  However, most people choose to go with a prepackaged home surveillance system that's already laid out and ready to go.  With these systems, you simply make a few choices, then you'll tweak the kit a little if need be.  You will then have a complete surveillance system ready to install.

For instance, the first thing you'll want to determine is how many cameras you'll want.

 Draw  rough sketch of the area you're wanting to keep any eye on. Determine which points will need cameras to provide the coverage you need.  Keep in mind, most home surveillance systems come with 4, 8 or 16 cameras.  Next determine how and where the video cables will run to get the signal back to the DVR or monitor, which will allow you to record the video or watch it real time. Finally, determine if any of these camera locations will be better served if the camera is wireless, as opposed to having to run the cabling all the way back to the center point.  While wireless cameras typically cost a little more, the decreased amount of cabling
required as well as the decrease amount of installation labor, may just make the most sense.

Next, go online and review the surveillance packages available.  Choose one that is most like

what you've determined you'll need.  For instance, some packages offer 4 hard wired cameras and 4 wired security cameras.  This is one of the most popular as it allows the greatest flexibility.  Determine if the kit you've chosen needs any modifications.  Maybe you'll need to order an extra hundred feet of cable or so or some specialty adapters. Don't hesitate to talk with the supplier and make any adjustments as needed.  Most suppliers are quite accommodating.

You may also want to consider adding a couple of dummy security cameras, too.  These will allow you to install a couple of fake surveillance cameras in positions which may not need a lot of coverage.  Or, you may find you can stretch your Surveillance System Budget a little by getting a couple of these inexpensive camera heads.  The burglar won't know the difference.
