As recently as a decade ago, CCTV surveillance systems were too expensive for anyone except the government or the very well-to-do. On top of that you had to be a genius to figure out how to hook them up and make them work.

With crime seemingly always on the rise the need continues to grow for effective crime fighting tools and surveillance cameras are some of the best there is. Not only do they act as a deterrent to home and business burglary or vandalism, they also act as prima fascia evidence for prosecution in the event a crime takes place.

There are so many options when it comes to surveillance cameras and systems that it can be confusing. For the normal homeowner or business owner here are a few suggestions.

Depending on the size of your home or business a complete surveillance system may be the answer. You can get a wired or wireless system form 4 to 16 cameras or more starting at $500.00. They will have everything you need to hook it up from cables to brackets.

One system is the USB DVR that is so simple to operate and use. It just so happens to be the least expensive making it a very attractive solution. It is networkable so you can view from any where in the world.

Another possibility is a high speed pan, tilt, zoom (PTZ) dome camera. These highly sophisticated "eyes in the sky" are usually associated with high traffic and high crime areas but can work very well for a home security situation.

CCTV systems are digital now for improved performance, surveillance camera maneuverability, and quicker feedback. Almost all new systems will have a wireless alternative with wireless technology making rapid improvements as well.

Surveillance technology will get cheaper, smaller, faster and more reliable within the next few years as computers and cameras work together to monitor security making it a much more affordable option.

Jack Krohn owns 'Security Solutions' and has written over 400 articles on self defense and home security.

Complete Surveillance Systems are great for external building security.

A High Speed PTZ Dome is the "Eye in the Sky"

Find out how to SAVE a HUGE 10% off your first order.

Suggest Company Name...?

Surveillance and CCTV "closed circuit television" have become a booming industry over the last few years. Cameras are being installed everywhere; locations such as traffic signals, parking lots, corporate and small businesses, supermarkets, industrial plants, hospitals, airports, all the way to the plains of the Serengeti for viewing wildlife via a wireless IP camera.

The simple fact is that there is probably some form of CCTV in every public place that we travel to and from. At the moment, CCTV is mainly used for security surveillance. Most standard security cameras have what's known as night vision; which means when darkness falls, the cameras have a built in infrared illuminator that uses infrared light instead of the regular lighting spectrum in order to produce better images in complete darkness or low light conditions. This type of night vision camera only records in black and white, but some cameras will record color during the day.

The main drawback to this type of infrared illuminator camera, is that the viewing distance of the camera is limited to the range of the infrared light emitter's project. Do not confuse an infrared camera with a day/night camera. Day/night cameras can record in low light, but not in zero light and do not use infrared lighting that actually sees into the infrared spectrum.

True infrared cameras do not use IR illuminators instead they use a micro bolometer; this is a special type of sensor the camera uses to see light from a different region of the electromagnetic spectrum than we normally use to see. This type of camera is not dependant on any light source to see. Now with several new advances in infrared technology; we are discovering new fields of use for true full spectrum infrared cameras integrated with CCTV units. Since all warm-blooded animals exude heat; Infrared cameras work great for security systems. Even at the zero light level, an infrared camera will still see the normally non visible light from your heat signature.

Obviously the ability to see at night without any light necessary is an excellent boost to any security system. But what other benefits can infrared cameras offer with surveillance systems? CCTV is now being used with infrared camera systems to monitor industrial equipment or anything temperature relevant, this can be used in a multitude of applications. Many industrial plants have been using this method to monitor temperature related situations; such as the temperature of a pipe or the liquid flowing through that pipe, analyzing simple or complex machinery, circuitry, or wiring to view what component is running above or below operation tolerances for the devices operational run time.

In short, the Infrared CCTV cameras can be applied in many different modes. Remote or local security CCTV can operate in low or nonexistent light levels, especially at night. Infrared CCTV also has other applications such as, constant operational run time monitoring, diagnosing, troubleshooting, and analysis.

Infrared Cameras Inc. is a leading manufacturer of a wide range of infrared security camera for multiple applications.
Call 1-866-861-0788 to order now!

It breaks my heart?

Last night in the pub I was talking to my brother, and he said he doesn't care about the fact that CCTV is rife and that the police are becoming more aggressive. He doesn't care that some humn beings are being treated differently because they happen to be of a different skin colour or belief. How can I fight for freedom when no-one around me wants it or seems to care? Why don;t they care? Are the sacrifices of men and women for freedom throughout history so quickly forgotten? It makes me hurt.
I will not sacrifice my freedoms for marginal security, and neither should you. If you want that, go to North Korea.
If I have nothing to hide I have nothing to warrant surveillance. And you cannot say "all muslims are troublemakers". Not all are. Thats the sortof propaganda that was spread before the Holocaust. Haven;t you learnt anything from history? PLEASE just try and get on with people, please. Its just not worth causing fights.

It breaks my heart, too.

A gentleman in the 1950s named McCarthy said that if you have nothing to hide, you won't care about the intrusion. As I recall, McCarthyism never garnered a single Communist, but it sure wrecked a lot of people's lives.

Most Constitution-embracing politicians on both sides of the aisle simply want AQ, et al., attacked, imprisoned, and prosecuted justly--the American way.

Think about it: if we abandon our principles, abandon justice, abandon respect for international institutions, and rule of law, UBL, AQ, et al., have already won. We would no longer be Americans. When America loses its ideals and principles, it becomes "just another state," not the beacon of freedom.

No security surveillance system will operate if there is no system installed to power all cameras operating at once. A CCTV power supply system can help distribute power, as well as protect cameras from electrical pulses that can destroy the equipment. It also gives security administration the option to keep the power separate from the main grid of a building, so that the cameras will still function despite blackouts. The strength of a security system is only as strong as any weakness it may have. Any one camera that goes out can be a liability. A well-kept power distribution method keeps all cameras working in sync.

While there are some simpler security set-ups that forego complicated power distribution by individually and separately powering each camera, the drawbacks of this sometimes outweigh the advantages. Individual cameras are easier to power down if they lack a central source of electricity. Intruders can trip circuit breakers of individual rooms, terminating decentralized cameras. Battery powered cameras, on the other hand, are harder to maintain. Some intrusion attempts can feature more elaborate efforts to blackout entire floors or even entire buildings themselves to knock out security. Without a supply of power, alarms, cameras and other defenses are rendered useless. A smart power supply system is one that is fed by alternate routes of electricity. This will keep cameras operating no matter what happens.

Inclement weather like blizzards or hurricanes can knock out electricity when least expected. Electrical systems can be destroyed by a bolt of lightning, also destroying the thousands of dollars spent on CCTV surveillance systems. Strong CCTV power supply sets can save the cameras and the central system from harm.

The right to see CCTV in the UK (see below)?

My car got scraped in a train station car park and whoever did it drove off without leaving insurance details.

The British Transport Police are going to look at the CCTV and see if they can see the number plate; I need to call them back this week. I'm just wondering . . . if they say they can't do anything about it am I entitled to request a copy of the CCTV myself?

Thus far everyone I've spoken to at the police / transport police have been utterly gormless and I have little trust and confidence in them. In fact, one person I spoke to didn't even know how to transfer a call so asked me to call back and when I did I was transferred to the wrong person!

They're trying to make out the chances of getting the person are very slim. So I question why my hard-earned tax is being spent on security systems that don't work!

UK answers only please.

i am pretty sure i once read in the metro that since you are being filmed you are allowed to see the footage at any time??

i am sure it was law for you to be abe to see it ... something like that

You've come across several surveillance systems and the one that hit your sweet spot is a 4-Channel Wired USB DVR Complete System. But the question is, do you really need it?

Components

Let's start basing your needs on the different components of a 4-Channel Wired USB DVR complete system.

USB Stand-Alone 4-Channel DVR

DVRs are always the better option compared to VCR receivers. With VCR, your videos are sure to have poor image and audio quality. Moreover, a VCR can't work with multiple cameras at the same time. You will have to switch from one real-time video to another.

The four-channel bit is just as easy to decide on. This means the system can only work with four channels and no more than that. If you have more than four cameras installed in your home or office then you might need an 8 or 16-channel system instead.

Finally, we get to the "USB stand-alone" function of the DVR. This means that you'll only have to plug the device via its USB for the DVR to work. It's as easy as that.

Day/Night, Color, Wired Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras are small in size, which makes it easy for you to create hard-to-reach hiding places for them. This is a must if you don't want thieves or vandals to destroy them right after they break inside your property.

Wired systems basically mean that you'll have to connect the wires to other devices in the system to make sure they're all interoperable. Wired systems are more physically taxing in terms of installation, but at least you won't have to figure out network configurations for them.

Finally, we get to its image recording options. Its day-night capabilities enable the cameras to automatically detect light levels and adjust accordingly. During the day, your camera would record footages in full color. When day turns into night, the camera will then switch to infrared lighting and shoot in black-and-white mode instead.

100-Foot Cables

Complete systems must include the necessary cables. But if 100 feet is not enough to have everything connected, you'll have to purchase extra.

LCD Monitor

A DVR surveillance system cannot be complete without its own LCD monitor. The size varies, however, depending on the system specifications of your provider. If possible, avoid using CRT monitors with your system because they not only consume more power but their rendition of image is also less accurate.

Other optional components for your 4-channel Wired USB DVR system would be a mouse and remote control unit.

Find out if the costs of 4 channel wired USB DVR system are sufficient for the safety of your home or office.
what is stand-alone operating system?

what is stand-alone operating system?

can anyone give me two examples which can be run on an IBM compatible PC.

A stand-alone operating system is a system that is independent of another for example windows 3.1,95, 98 were all a shell based on the ms-dos operating system to put it in simpler terms windows was a dressed up version of ms-dos with all the bells and whistles to be more appealing to the eye and be more user friendly . later versions of windows were independent of the ms-dos operating system hence they are known as "stand alone operating systems".

A few operating systems that can run on IBM compatible PCs:

Windows (any version)

Linux (any distro)

Macintosh (possible but not legally)

In the early days, video from multiple security cameras were recorded using time-lapse VCRs and multiplexers. Due to recent advancements in recording technology, digital video recorders (DVRs) have started replacing many VCRs and multiplexers. DVR security camera systems record video on a hard drive-based medium, eliminating the need for a videotape. These sophisticated systems have the ability to manage multiple cameras as well as record and playback video locally or through the Internet.

Before choosing a DVR, decide how many cameras you want to connect to it. The video recording rate, which is calculated in frames per second (fps), should also play a major role in your buying decision. For high-end security systems, opt for a DVR that has a high recording rate; however, a camera with a low recording rate would be sufficient to meet most security needs.

There are two types of DVRs, PC-based models and stand-alone units. ApexCCTV offers both. PC-based DVRs come with 4, 8, 12, 16, or 32 camera inputs. These security DVR systems convert analog signals to digital signals and compress them. The compressed data is then stored on a hard drive for archiving and playback. By entering the date and time using their on-screen menus, PC-based DVR systems allow you to search and easily retrieve images and videos of any point in time.

You can access a DVR surveillance camera system from a remote location using any TCP/IP network or dial-up connection. The video that the security camera systems capture can even be viewed with client software. The PC-based DVR has the added advantage of allowing you to connect more cameras when you install multiple DVR cards in your computer. These capture cards are available from INOX, AverMedia, and GeoVision.

You can also opt for stand-alone DVR systems. It can be operated by the simple push of a button and does not require the use of a PC. They come with 4, 8, 9, or 16 camera inputs. Because their video is compressed less than PC-based units, stand-alone DVR security systemsoffer better picture quality. They have a single circuit board with software that is encoded on their chips. The software of these DVR surveillance systems is often more stable than PC-based DVRs.

Standalone DVR units are very efficient when used for home security. They allow you to monitor your security cameras while you watch TV. They also include an IR remote that lets you control the live video from your security camera. If you want to record and store this data, then get a stand-alone DVR model that includes a hard drive.

Security DVR systems provide detailed images and crystal clear video that do not degrade. They also allow you to record video for a longer period of time and let you pause the video without distorting the picture. To upgrade your surveillance system, a DVR from ApexCCTV is a great choice.

Although there are many articles on CCTV and surveillance systems, most are for the professional integrator and most are for commercial, industrial or government applications. This brief article is designed to acquaint the average homeowner to some of the key concepts and terms that might be helpful for a simple home surveillance system.

The basic surveillance system is comprised of the camera, lens, and monitor, and if recorded video is needed, then a recording device, such as a VCR or a DVR. Let's first look at the camera.

The key items to know about the camera are whether indoor or outdoor application, amount of available light for the camera to see, needed resolution of the camera, and last, wireless or hard wire from the camera to the monitor.

Light levels for cameras are usually measured in Lux, which is a measurement of light energy on a surface. A typical office environment might have 500 Lux whereas a residential street lighting might be 0.5 – 3 Lux. Decent color cameras often will have a 2 Lux or lower rating and monochrome (B & W) cameras often under 1 Lux.

A great way to handle night vision problems is with IR lighting. IR LEDs, usually on the camera itself, provide illumination and if a color camera, at night, the camera will switch to monochrome and is, therefore, essentially a 0 Lux camera for the distance of the IR LEDs.

Resolution for cameras is expressed in TV horizontal lines. Standard resolution for a B & W camera is perhaps 380 TV lines and a high resolution might be 550 TV lines or higher. For color, standard resolution is a minimum of 330 TV lines and high resolution 480 TV lines or higher. Professionals need a 500 TVL or higher, perhaps, to read the number of a license plate on a moving car. However, for most home security applications 380 TVL is sufficient.

Two types of image sensors are used in cameras today, CCD and CMOS. They use different technologies and generally speaking, CCD sensors create higher quality and lower noise images then

CMOS sensors. On the other hand, CMOS cameras consume far less power and cost much less to manufacture. CMOS cameras are rapidly catching up to CCD cameras in terms of image quality.

The lens is important and the focal length of the lens tells you the field of view the camera will see at a particular distance. For example, with a 1/3 inch format camera and lens, a 2.8mm lens will see at 10 feet away a 17 ft wide and 13 ft high area at about an 80-degree angle. Using an 8mm lens for the same distance, the area is now only 6 ft wide and 4.5 high and the angle is 33 degrees. The smaller the focal length number is the wider the field of view becomes.

Wireless transmission is increasingly popular because government regulations have changed and allow systems without a license to transmit up to around 100 meters line of sight. This means maybe an average range of 25-30 meters indoors. Although many of these cameras can be battery powered, for permanent use a power supply is still needed. This means no wire is needed between the camera and the monitor, but you still need an outlet, typically, to plug the DC converter power supply in for the camera and the monitor will also need its own power supply. Still, for many homeowners this is far preferable than running RG59 coax throughout their home.

The monitor can be a dedicated professional CCTV monitor, or in the case of most home surveillance systems, just use one of the TVs already available. Most of today's TVs have multiple A/V inputs and outputs with RCA type of connections.

If recording is needed, again most homes have either a VCR or DVR available. However, home VCRs and DVRs are not designed for 24 hour per day recording, 365 days per year. For this type of recording need, it is best to buy a separate, professional unit designed for heavy-duty recording.

If more than one camera is used then a switcher or quad processor is often used to change between camera pictures one at a time, or to display up to four cameras at the same time on one screen. Remember what is seen on the monitor or TV is what is recorded.

Professional integrators today use multiple channel DVRs for

recording up to 32 cameras, or more, in one box with large hard drives and network capability. For most home surveillance applications, however, a quad processor with a VCR or single channel DVR is sufficient.

How can i make my laptop a DVR for CCTV Purposes? (video Survellence)?

Ive got the camera and the reciever for the camera, but what else would i need to hook the reciever up to the laptop? It doesnt have any AVI slots? is there a AVI to USB converter?

Hi,

you need a USB capture device that will convert your video output from the reciever to USB, in most cases the USB device would be supplied with software that can record but to turn it into a surveillance application you could use this IP surveillance / USB webcam CCTV recording software that also lets you watch the cameras from any PC anywhere in the world. You can try it for free at http://www.bikal.co.uk/network-surveillance/ip-software.html

Almost every business has some kind of security system for a variety of purposes from preventing shoplifting, to simple surveillance, to employee security, room security, alarms, computer security, the list is almost endless. Security cameras are usually part of that system.

Sometimes a security camera can be as good a deterrent as a burglar alarm or a security guard. If there is a security breach a camera can be used to identify the bad guys. Video evidence is almost impossible to refute.

Businesses need to be concerned about internal and external security. Internal is employees, customers and suppliers inside a building. External security has to do with burglars, vandals and others who would do harm to the business.

There are several categories of business security cameras. We will review 3 types: hidden cameras; complete camera systems and high speed PTZ dome cameras.

Hidden cameras come in many styles some complete with DVR's inside. They come disguised as normal office or household items like wall clocks, alarm clocks, exit signs, desk lamps, thermostats, tower fans, CO detector and many more. Some are wired; most are wireless, some black and white some in color.

The technology requires a DVR or some means to record the images and a monitor to view them. All are readily available.

If you are looking for a way to catch a dishonest employee or monitor a high theft area like food out the back door when no one is looking a hidden camera may solve your problem.

Complete systems on the other hand are anything but discreet. They have everything included from cameras, wiring, monitor and DVR to do mostly external security on buildings and parking lots. They can have anywhere from 4 to 16 cameras. Some systems are wired some come wireless.

They send a clear unmistakable message that the building is being watched.

Lastly are PTZ dome cameras. They are the most sophisticated security cameras in the world. They have full pan tilt zoom capability with great resolution and 230 X -236 X magnification and a fabulous zoom lens that varies by model. One model automatically adjusts to changes in light and object distances with 360° continuous monitoring.

They are the perfect answer for external security to catch vandals. Want to get the license plate # on someone who just robbed your business? Turn a high speed PTZ camera loose on them.

My CD drive on my computer is messed up?

I try to open via the button and it just makes the sound like its trying to open but can't. I can open it with the pinhole technique, but if I put a cd in it, it just pops back open. If I manage to get the cd in, the second it reads it, it opens automatically. What's wrong with it? What can I do?

Based on what you said, it sounds to me as though the CD drive is in need of replacement. I'd like to suggest that when you do replace it, you do so with a CD/DVD combo drive, since you're going to the trouble of removing the old one. To look at some of them, click on the below link on newegg.com Good luck.

With crime rising and troublesome folks playing a major role in everyday life, its wise to have some sort of surveillance for your home, such as a wireless pinhole camera. Sometimes you may suspect that your spouse is cheating on you, or you're being stalked and harassed. There may even be times when you are concerned about babysitters or nannies caring for your children. Well, here are some valuable pointers on installing up a wireless pinhole camera to help help you feel more secure. Security of yourself and loved ones are top priority. It has nothing to do with paranoia. Try to place wireless pinhole cameras in places that are legal. If you are not sure, check with your local PD to clarify any questions that may arise, especially when concerning permits. All suggestions are meant to be used within the limits of the law.

Today's market offer an array of wireless pinhole cameras, ranging from cheap to excessively expensive. The more money you are willing to spend, the more features you will acquire and be able to use at your discretion. However, for primary purposes, a simple wireless pinhole camera and an AC adapter should do the trick. Sure, you can buy a teddy bear nanny cam, wall clock, or lamp with a camera hidden inside of it (which can be costly), but purchasing a mini wireless pinhole camera alone will cost you less money and you can place wherever you prefer.

Within my current home situation, I have wired my home to avoid invasions due my home is wired against intrusion due to people peeping through my windows and invading my privacy. To rectify the problem, I contacted my local law enforcement agency and sought their opinions. In return, they told me that it was legal to set up a wireless pinhole camera. Therefore, I logged onto eBay and learned about wireless pinhole cameras and other surveillance systems. With my current budget in mind, it was important that I find a wireless pinhole camera that was not too expensive. I found a wireless pinhole camera kit for only $40 bucks.

The wireless pinhole camera kit was mailed to me which included a receiver, two AC adapters, a cable and the tiny little wireless pinhole camera. Assembly was really easy! All I had to do was plug the adapter into the camera and another adapter into the receiver. Then, of course, plug each adapter into the wall outlet. Easy as pie! The kit included a battery hookup for wireless use, but some prefer the adapters. However, the challenging part was figuring out how to make the camera and receiver communicate and sync with my television. In the end, it was easier that I first imagined.

My surveillance receiver is color coded with video input plugs, which includes one yellow white input. I simply plugged the cables into the corresponding colors and hooked the other ends into the back of television with the matching colors. There is a knob on the side of the receiver to help adjust the picture to fit your needs. You may ask yourself "How can I find the picture" due to only seeing TV programs.

You have to find the "Video Source" button on your primary remote control. It may not look the same on all of them. Ultimately, this button controls your ability to switch your TV to DVD or VCR, etc.. There maybe different frequencies on your television so hit you "Video Source" button repeatedly until you find the correct channel. When you see a picture on the screen of a little plugged in camera (make sure the camera is connected and on) you've found the right one. If the screen goes blank (keep changing the frequency on the receiver until you find the right one). Then, on the wireless pinhole camera, just change the adjustable knob to until you achieve the desired picture quality.

It can become tricky trying to adjust the pinhole camera but monitoring interference will not be a problem of nay sort. Ask a friend to come over and help you so that you can take turns going back and forth adjusting the picture quality. If you want to secure the camera in place try using heavy duty double sided tape.

Using a wireless pinhole camera may not be for all but a heck of an idea for those who have victimized, vandalized, or harassed. Don't let the offenders get the best of you or your loved ones. Now you have proof and it wasn't too expensive or pricey. Just simply install following one step at a time and viola, your safe and secure. Now, who said you are technically challenged?

Please someone answer my headache question?

My husband and i spent 20 min in as far infrared sauna for the first time last night and this morning we have headaches(all day). we were fine until this morning and we have had lots of water. can someone tell me what might be going on? I heard there aren't any side effects. Help please thank you !
Could this be a side effect of this new detox

Does sound like a dehydration headache...... drinking water will help, but you would want to make sure to have had enough water before, to prevent the headache... getting rid of it will take longer.

A shopping mall presents a nightmare for a security team. Large numbers of people constantly entering and leaving, hundreds of small objects that can easily be pilfered by a nimble-fingered thief, and a wide area of space that needs to be covered by surveillance. For this reason, shopping malls need a surveillance strategy that utilizes the best planning, resources and technology available to protect the safety of goods, staff and customers. IP cameras, also known as network cameras or Internet cameras, represent the latest in surveillance technology, and help to solve the nightmare of shopping mall security.

The Benefits of IP Cameras

An IP camera sends recorded information via the Internet, rather than onto a tape like previous technology. This is a benefit not only in terms of cost and convenience, but also in the protection of the people and objects being watched.

Internet cameras can be totally wireless, allowing easy set-up that takes a matter of minutes rather than days.

Since surveillance video is sent over the Internet, the video server can potentially be accessed from outside the site of business, an advantage not present in previous surveillance systems. This means footage of criminal activity can be instantly sent to authorities, quickly identifying suspects. This also means security teams can keep an eye on the store from anywhere in the world, and do not have to always arrive at a single location in order to keep an eye on surveillance practices.

Amazingly, even control functions can be accessed through the Internet through any pre-designated computer. But even with these capabilities, security personnel can't maintain an eye on each camera twenty-four hours a day. Network cameras cover this problem as well, as they are usually equipped with motion-detector technology as a standard feature. This means the camera will only record when something is moving on-screen, making review of the footage far easier and saving disk space. It can also be arranged that security personnel are notified by email or SMS when movement is taking place in a certain area.

Installing the IP Camera System in Your Store

While the latest technology in surveillance offers many advantages in convenience and safety, a great amount of thought and care still needs to be taken to make sure the cameras in a shopping mall are well laid out, in order to minimize blind spots and target areas with a high risk of criminal activity.

It's most important that cameras cover every entrance and exit of the store, as well as hallways and pathways to and from other businesses. Areas in which high levels of activity take place over a wide area may have to be covered by more than one camera, as criminals may become aware of blind spots in the cameras vision and target these areas.

Having a decent surveillance system is the responsibility of every shopping mall. Instituting technology such as IP cameras isn't just for saving money, it protects customers and staff and allows them to be comfortable with the knowledge of being present in a safe environment.

They offer high quality video with reliable service. These cameras are available at Network Camera Store.

I am looking for a surveillance wireless camera with sd card option.?

I trying to get information on wireless surveillance camera that has an sd card slot. The camera should function in such a way that when the camera looses wireless connectivity then it should write to the SD card and when the connection is restored then stop writing to the SD card.

Not aware of any cameras that even have a memory card slot, let alone the capability you ask for.

Damn good idea though, you should sell it to one of the manufacturers of such devices!
